Moon Boots

Neil Armstrong’s moon boots are still siting on the moon along with nine other pairs worn during the Apollo missions. They were jettison to compensate for the additional weight in moon rocks they were bringing back to earth.

Ascii Art

Here’s a site of some of that old ascii art. Pictures of celebrities created entirely from ascii characters. I remember in typing class in high school using old fashion typewriters to create ‘type art’ but not quite on the scale as these.

Pools more Dangerous than Guns

According to authors Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner in their book Freakonomics, pools are more dangerous to children than guns.

If you both own a gun and have a swimming pool in the backyard, the swimming pool is about 100 times more likely to kill a child than the gun is.

Still Trying to make it Daily

Seems I don’t have enough time to write a daily blog like I had hoped. It seems that something of Interest is really just something of interest to me. But that’s what it’s about anyway. This original experiment was to come up with one new and interesting item a day. I’ve failed on that point. If anyone other than me is interested in reading this all the better, hope you’re entertained or at least amused. As with this post I keep adding more to it to make it better, just my perfectionist nature coming out.

Jonny Quest was a primetime program

A favorite cartoon of my youth, I was surprised to discover that it originally aired in prime time for a single season.

“26 Jonny Quest episodes originally aired in primetime during the 1964-65 season.”

There have been a few resurrections of the series, but none have come close in quality to the original classic 26 episodes.

I own and highly recommend the DVD set.

Don’t let “First Season” throw you, there was only one season.

Original Willy Wonka was a Promotional Gimmick

The original 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was devised as a promotional tool for a new candy bar from Quaker Oats. Unfortunately the candy bar had to be recalled soon after it’s release because of formulation problems that caused the chocolate bar to melt. In fact, the title of the film was changed from Charlie, to Wonka to include the name of the candy bar.

A site make long unmanagable urls into one liners. Very handy, thanks John Stossel. I noticed he was using them in an online article.

Pentagon’s Open Door

Bob Schieffer in his book This Just In: What I Couldn’t Tell You on TV tells how the Pentagon in the early 70s was open to the public (at least the outer rings). There were no security checks or clearances needed. The public could wander in and out at their pleasure. Schieffer even says he didn’t even bother to obtain his press credentials for the first few months of service as the Pentagon correspondent for CBS.
